Indian Marriages - Horoscopes and Stars - Match

Arranged marriages in India seem to follow a well accepted pattern. After weighing the proposal, for what it is worth, the middle man or go between is asked to bring the horoscope copy of the girl or the boy. An astrologer is consulted and the horoscopes verified. In case the horoscopes are not available, the details such as the date of birth, time of birth and the place of birth are to be provided.

Every horoscope has different number of ‘paapa-grahas’(certain planets); and a certain value is given for each of the ‘graha’. The total value should be equal in both the horoscopes. The girl’s ‘papa- graha’ value can be slightly less, by one point.

‘Dasa-sandhi’ and ‘sama-dasa’ should match. Bad ‘dasa’ and good ‘dasa’ will be there in every life. But both the husband and wife shouldn’t have unpleasant period or dasa at the same duration. This aspect should be given a serious consideration.

Star-match has at least ten main points to be considered. Raasi match, Rasyaadhipan match, Vasyam, Ganam, Yoni, Dinam, Mahendram, Sthree deergham, Rejju and Vedham. The concerned horoscopes should have all these match making favorable points. And that will be a perfect match, which rarely happens. Six or seven matches out of ten is considered the best possible match. Astrologer will agree even if it is only four out of ten, provided the important ones are agreeable.

What are the important ones? ‘Ganam’, ‘Vedha’, and ‘Rejju’ are the three major match making factors. These three will decide the strength and length of the married life. ‘Manushya’, ‘Daiva’ and ‘Asura’ are three groups or types of people in this world. If one person is ‘asura’ the other should not be ‘daiva’, the couple will fight always. The couple will always find fault with the other. Vedha and Rejju will decide the length of their lives. No one will dare take a risk on this.
